Sunday Spotlight: WILD by Hannah Moskowitz

Spotlight Sunday is a day to highlight something, anything you enjoy, as long as it pertains to books somehow. There’s likely going to be no rhyme or reason to the spotlights, just what I feel like. If you have some theme you’d like to see me talk about, don’t hesitate to leave a comment and let me know!

The Book:

WILD by Hannah Moskowitz

Zack Ramos is training for two things: being a parent to his twelve-year-old sister once his mother’s early-onset Alzheimer’s (the same kind he and his sister each have a 50% chance of developing–but let’s not think about that) progresses too far, and running a one hundred mile race through the mountains of Tennessee. His support system is longtime girlfriend Jordan Jonas, who’s sweet, sarcastic, and entirely virtual. They’ve been talking for years but still have never met in person. Because Jordan, it turns out, was still waiting for the right time to tell him that she’s Deaf.

The revelation brings them closer together, and Zack throws himself into learning sign language and trying to navigate their way through their different cultures. But with the stress of a tumultuous relationship, a new language, a sick mother, and his uncertain future, there’s going to be a breaking point…and it might be out there in the Tennessee wild.

From the author of critically-acclaimed books like TEETH, BREAK, and A HISTORY OF GLITTER AND BLOOD comes a story about what happens when love takes you off the beaten track…way, way off.

Why I Chose to Spotlight This:

Hannah Moskowitz is an amazing author and person, who I enjoy following and interacting with on social media, so I couldn’t pass up the opportunity to feature her and this new book for the first Spotlight Sunday.

Just reading the blurb, I am so intrigued by how this story will play out. It deals with several sensitive topics, and I can’t wait to see how the characters handle everything. The main character, Zack, is clearly under a lot of pressure in his personal life, forced to take on the role of parent to his younger sister due to their mother’s debilitating illness. Will he crack under the pressure? Will he hold steady and come out of this even stronger? How will he deal when other aspects of his life change? I already feel for this boy and want to protect him from pain.

As I said, I follow the author on social media, so I have seen the occasional update and teasers from her, which have only made me itch to have this even more. Finally the day has come and we can all get it!

Saturday Tea & Romance · Weekly Themes

Saturday Tea & Romance!

Tea & Romance is the name of the game! Each Saturday, I will recommend a romance novel/series, as well as a delicious tea to go along with it!

Inspired by my one of my favorites, historical romance–Okay, that’s a lie. I whined to Tristina about not having a theme for Saturdays, and she came up with this as soon as the caffeine kicked in, and here we are.

I do really love historical romance, so my first recommendation will be from that subgenre! But first,

THE HATHAWAYS SERIES by Lisa Kleypas! (5 books)

MINE TILL MIDNIGHT (The Hathaways, #1)

When an unexpected inheritance elevates her family to the ranks of the aristocracy, Amelia Hathaway discovers that tending to her younger sisters and wayward brother was easy compared to navigating the intricacies of the ton. Even more challenging: the attraction she feels for the tall, dark, and dangerously handsome Cam Rohan.

Wealthy beyond most men’s dreams, Cam has tired of society’s petty restrictions and longs to return to his “uncivilized” Gypsy roots. When the delectable Amelia appeals to him for help, he intends to offer only friendship—but intentions are no match for the desire that blindsides them both. But can a man who spurns tradition be tempted into that most time-honored arrangement: marriage? Life in London society is about to get a whole lot hotter…

SEDUCE ME AT SUNRISE (The Hathaways, #2)

He has tried hard to forget her.

Kev Merripen has longed for the beautiful, well-bred Winnifred Hathaway ever since her family rescued him from the brink of death when he was just a boy. But this handsome Gypsy is a man of mysterious origins—and he fears that the darkness of his past could crush delicate, luminous Win. So Kev refuses to submit to temptation… and before long Win is torn from him by a devastating twist of fate.

Can she remember the man he once was?

Then, Win returns to England… only to find that Kev has hardened into a man who will deny love at all costs. Meantime, an attractive, seductive suitor has set his sights on Win. It’s now or never for Kev to make his move. But first, he must confront a dangerous secret about his destiny—or risk losing the only woman he has lived for…

TEMPT ME AT TWILIGHT (The Hathaways, #3)

He was everything she’d sworn to avoid.

Poppy Hathaway loves her unconventional family, though she longs for normalcy. Then fate leads to a meeting with Harry Rutledge, an enigmatic hotel owner and inventor with wealth, power, and a dangerous hidden life. When their flirtation compromises her own reputation, Poppy shocks everyone by accepting his proposal—only to find that her new husband offers his passion, but not his trust.

And she was everything he needed.

Harry was willing to do anything to win Poppy—except to open his heart. All his life, he has held the world at arm’s length…but the sharp, beguiling Poppy demands to be his wife in every way that matters. Still, as desire grows between them, an enemy lurks in the shadows. Now if Harry wants to keep Poppy by his side, he must forge a true union of body and soul, once and for all…

MARRIED BY MORNING (The Hathaways, #4)

He is everything she wants to avoid…

For two years, Catherine Marks has been a paid companion to the Hathaway sisters—a pleasant position, with one caveat. Her charges’ older brother, Leo Hathaway, is thoroughly exasperating. Cat can hardly believe that their constant arguing could mask a mutual attraction. But when one quarrel ends in a sudden kiss, Cat is shocked at her powerful response—and even more so when Leo proposes a dangerous liaison.

She is not at all what she seems…

Leo must marry and produce an heir within a year to save his family home. Catherine’s respectable demeanor hides a secret that would utterly destroy her. But to Leo, Cat is intriguing and infernally tempting, even to a man resolved never to love again. The danger Cat tried to outrun is about to separate them forever—unless two wary lovers can find a way to banish the shadows and give in to their desires…

LOVE IN THE AFTERNOON (The Hathaways, #5)

She harbors a secret yearning.

As a lover of animals and nature, Beatrix Hathaway has always been more comfortable outdoors than in the ballroom. Even though she participated in the London season in the past, the classic beauty and free-spirited Beatrix has never been swept away or seriously courted… and she has resigned herself to the fate of never finding love. Has the time come for the most unconventional of the Hathaway sisters to settle for an ordinary man—just to avoid spinsterhood?

He is a world-weary cynic.

Captain Christopher Phelan is a handsome, daring soldier who plans to marry Beatrix’s friend, the vivacious flirt Prudence Mercer, when he returns from fighting abroad. But, as he explains in his letters to Pru, life on the battlefield has darkened his soul—and it’s becoming clear that Christopher won’t come back as the same man. When Beatrix learns of Pru’s disappointment, she decides to help by concocting Pru’s letters to Christopher for her. Soon the correspondence between Beatrix and Christopher develops into something fulfilling and deep… and when Christopher comes home, he’s determined to claim the woman he loves. What began as Beatrix’s innocent deception has resulted in the agony of unfulfilled love—and a passion that can’t be denied.

Flashback Friday! (April 28)

Who’s ready for another backlist book to read and love?

This week’s book is…

I am not generally a huge fan of Westerns, but Abigail Roux has the master’s touch when it comes to these stories. You can tell that she has put a lot of time and effort into studying the time period in order to make the novels feel realistic. And she really does do an incredible job of sucking you into the story and holding you there, so you feel like you’re riding right along with the four main characters as they reluctantly journey together.

Also, this book has some A+ rep! All four of the main characters are queer (homosexual and bisexual). Additionally, there are two disabled characters–one of the mains is mute and uses a kind of ASL-like shorthand when he can, and another character is missing a few fingers.

By the close of 1882, the inhabitants of the American West had earned their reputation as untamed and dangerous. The line between heroes and villains is narrow and indistinct. The concept that a man may only kill if backed into a corner is antiquated. Lives are worth less than horses. Treasures are worth killing for. And the law is written in the blood of those who came before. The only men staving off total chaos are the few who take the letter of the law at its word and risk their lives to uphold it. But in the West, the rules aren’t always played according to Hoyle.11002101

U.S. Marshals Eli Flynn and William Henry Washington are escorting two prisoners to New Orleans for trial when they discover there’s more to the infamous shootist Dusty Rose and the enigmatic man known only as Cage than merely being outlaws. When forces beyond the marshals’ control converge on the paddlewheeler they have hired to
take them downriver, they must choose between two dangers: playing by the rules at any cost or trusting the very men they are meant to bring to justice.

Flashback Friday! (April 21)

Hey, y’all!

I want to do a weekly post on BACKLIST books. As I’m sure you’ve noticed, too often, people see shiny new books coming out and don’t check out books that are a bit older. There’s, of course, absolutely nothing wrong with that.

I think it’s time we gave those books some lovin’, don’t you?

In the FLASHBACK FRIDAY series, I’m going to boost at least one book/series/author per week. Hopefully this will encourage others to do it as well, and maybe inspire people to go check out those backlist books and support some great authors.

So without further ado, our first FLASHBACK FRIDAY SPOTLIGHT is…

This trilogy is one of my absolute favorites! I binged it during high school, and every so often, I revisit the books.

I love the story of this girl, Gemma, discovering this world of magic that she had no clue about before and finding her place in this new reality she’s faced with. It’s so interesting to watch her navigate the every day life of Victorian England and boarding school, while forming tenuous friendships with other girls as they delve deeper into the magical mysteries. Each of the main four girls are so dynamic in their own ways, and it is such an amazing journey to watch their character development.

Also, this trilogy was one of my very first introductions to queer characters. There are two girls who are in a relationship, and baby queer Leah was so fascinated by their interactions and overall devotion to each other.

There are some epic action scenes, a ton of mythological creatures, an enemies-to-lovers dynamic between Gemma and her love interest, and so much more.

Trigger warnings for self-harm/cutting, drug usage, parental death, involuntary drugging

A Victorian boarding school story, a Gothic mansion mystery, a gossipy romp about a clique of girlfriends, and a dark other-worldly fantasy—jumble them all together and you have this complicated and unusual first novel.

Sixteen-year-old Gemma has had an unconventional upbringing in India, until the day she foresees her mother’s death in a black, swirling vision that turns out to be true. Sent back to England, she is enrolled at Spence, a girls’ academy with a mysterious burned-out East Wing. There Gemma is snubbed by powerful Felicity, beautiful Pippa, and even her own dumpy roommate Ann, until she blackmails herself and Ann into the treacherous clique. Gemma is distressed to find that she has been followed from India by Kartik, a beautiful young man who warns her to fight off the visions. Nevertheless, they continue, and one night she is led by a child-spirit to find a diary that reveals the secrets of a mystical Order. The clique soon finds a way to accompany Gemma to the other-world realms of her visions “for a bit of fun” and to taste the power they will never have as Victorian wives, but they discover that the delights of the realms are overwhelmed by a menace they cannot control. Gemma is left with the knowledge that her role as the link between worlds leaves her with a mission to seek out the “others” and rebuild the Order.

REBEL ANGELS (Gemma Doyle, #2)

Ah, Christmas! Gemma Doyle is looking forward to a holiday from Spence Academy, spending time with her friends in the city, attending ritzy balls, and on a somber note, tending to her ailing father. As she prepares to ring in the New Year, 1896, a handsome young man, Lord Denby, has set his sights on Gemma, or so it seems. Yet amidst the distractions of London, Gemma’s visions intensify–visions of three girls dressed in white, to whom something horrific has happened, something only the realms can explain…

The lure is strong, and before long, Gemma, Felicity, and Ann are turning flowers into butterflies in the enchanted world of the realms that Gemma alone can bring them to. To the girls’ great joy, their beloved Pippa is there as well, eager to complete their circle of friendship.

But all is not well in the realms–or out. The mysterious Kartik has reappeared, telling Gemma she must find the Temple and bind the magic, else great disaster will befall her. Gemma’s willing to do his intrusive bidding, despite the dangers it brings, for it means she will meet up with her mother’s greatest friend–and now her foe, Circe. Until Circe is destroyed, Gemma cannot live out her destiny. But finding Circe proves a most perilous task.

THE SWEET FAR THING (Gemma Doyle, #3)

IT HAS BEEN A YEAR OF CHANGE since Gemma Doyle arrived at the foreboding Spence Academy. Her mother murdered, her father a laudanum addict, Gemma has relied on an unsuspected strength and has discovered an ability to travel to an enchanted world called the realms, where dark magic runs wild. Despite certain peril, Gemma has bound the magic to herself and forged unlikely new alliances. Now, as Gemma approaches her London debut, the time has come to test these bonds. The Order – the mysterious group her mother was once part of – is grappling for control of the realms, as is the Rakshana. Spence’s burned East Wing is being rebuilt, but why now? Gemma and her friends see Pippa, but she is not the same. And their friendship faces its gravest trial as Gemma must decide once and for all what role she is meant for.
