REVIEW

This book started off well. While I could’ve done without it immediately beginning with sexual content, I enjoyed the first quarter of the book where the two main characters formed a bond through the traumatic experience they went through together.

It was when they finally met up again, six months later, that things started going downhill for me. Claudia is trying to talk to Shep and he’s sitting there thinking only about having sex with her. That’s when I checked out. The man seemingly couldn’t go five minutes without mentally inserting her into some kind of sexual situation.

Also, the relationship just wasn’t plausible and I had a difficult time suspending my disbelief. I believe they’re able to form a bond after experiencing trauma together, but I do not believe that six months of zero interaction, screwing less than a day after they meet again, and only being together for about 4-5 days total is enough for them to be able to say “I love you” to each other and mean it romantically. They barely know each other. They shared some of their secrets and past with each other, but it’s not nearly enough time or information to fall in love. Especially when most of the time they were together, they were just having sex.

The public sexual activity was also an issue for me. They’re in a diner together and Shep makes Claudia sit with her boobs exposed, out of her shirt, the whole time. If y’all want to do stuff like that in your own home or in some kind of club, that’s cool. But I have issues with this being done in a very public place where the other people within the diner were not allowed to consent to potentially seeing it.

Finally, if it wasn’t clear from what I’ve written so far, the sex was gratuitous. I’ve read some of Weatherspoon’s other work, so I know that multiple sex scenes are a staple in her writing, but this was just too much. It overshadowed and prevented any potential character and relationship development.

The dog, Shep’s older neighbors, and Claudia’s best friend Liz were the only saving graces and the reasons this got an extra star.
