12 Must Read Retellings

MUST READS

Retellings are one of my favorite subgenres, especially when said retelling takes the original text and makes it more diverse. So I’ve decided to compile a small list of some retellings that I’ve read and loved, or that I’m eagerly anticipating!

🌺 Cutie & the Beast by EJ Russell ✨ Retells: Beauty & the Beast 🌺
🌺 Of Metal and Wishes by Sarah Fine ✨ Retells: Phantom of the Opera 🌺
🌺 Wintersong by S. Jae-Jones ✨ Retells: Labyrinth / The Goblin King 🌺
🌺 The Story of Lizzy and Darcy by Grace Watson ✨ Retells: Pride and Prejudice 🌺

🌺 Not Now, Not Ever by Lily Anderson ✨ Retells: The Importance of Being Earnest 🌺
🌺 Peter Darling by Austin Chant ✨ Retells: Peter Pan 🌺
🌺 Brightly Burning by Alexa Donne ✨ Retells: Jane Eyre 🌺
🌺 The Secrets of Eden by Brandon Goode ✨ Retells: Cinderella 🌺

🌺 The Wrath and the Dawn by Renee Ahdieh ✨ Retells: 1001 Arabian Nights 🌺
🌺 Marian by Ella Lyons ✨ Retells: Robin Hood 🌺
🌺 The Dark Wife by Sarah Diemer ✨ Retells: Hades & Persephone myth 🌺
🌺 Ash by Malinda Lo ✨ Retells: Cinderella 🌺

Have you read any of these? Are there any other retellings you’d recommend?

  1. I got Wintersong as an ARC and I loved it so much, I got copies for my main girl friend group because they had to read it. The Wrath and the Dawn are pretty high on the Kindle TBR.

  2. I really really love Shannon Hale’s Goose Girl series, which is a retelling of the fairy tale by the same name. I also loooooved The Epic Crush of Genie Lo, though I’m not as familiar with the original story.

  3. I wasn’t a fan of The Wrath and the Dawn because of the relationship portrayal. I remember loving Ash. I loved the story of The Dark Wife, just not the writing style.

Some of my fave retellings are Sea Foam & Silence (verse novel, The Little Mermaid), Epic Crush of Genie Lo (prose novel, myths and tales of Sun Wukong the Monkey King – didn’t know the original) and The Palace of Illusions (prose novel, Mahabharata – didn’t know the original).
