Hiya lovelies! Today I have the honor of being one of the stops on the blog tour for Tristina Wright’s fantastic SFF adventure, 27 HOURS!
When asked what topic I wanted Wright to speak about for the guest post, the first thing to come to mind was, “What pieces of herself did she put into each of her characters?” In the past, Wright has spoken a bit about what parts of herself she put into the novel, most notable being her bisexuality and anxiety, the #ownvoices aspects of the story, so I was interested to hear more about what else made it into the text.
So, have a click on the read more to see what Tristina Wright had to say! And be sure to enter the giveaway at the end of this post and drop by the other tour stops!
I’ve talked often about putting pieces of me into each of the main six over the years as I worked on this book, and I’ve never really explained that until now.
My anger went into Rumor. His anger isn’t just rage. It’s devastation and hopelessness. It’s a bone-deep loss and the sort of helplessness you get when faced with a situation you can’t change no matter what – a death, a diagnosis, a loss. That aching frustrated feeling of unfairness and why me.
My hope went into Jude. He yearns for peace in the face of a seemingly unending war. His gift is both a blessing and a curse, and yet he still fights for a day when the war will end. He sees Rumor, who is filled to the brim with anger and devastation, and sees a boy who can heal.
My homesickness went into Nyx. That deep yearning for roots and belonging. That search for self and the fear that she’ll never find it or, worse, that it’s gone forever because of decisions out of her control.
My determination went into Dahlia. I made Dahlia the anchor of the group. She grounds everyone and has a spine of steel with a mother’s touch. She’s a medic-in-training and is hell-bent on finding her birth father. She’s a sounding board and a focus for any of the others when they need it, but absolutely does not hesitate to shake them by the shoulders if they need it, too.
My sarcasm went into Braeden. However, like Braeden, I use my sarcasm as a shield. Braeden hides a lot of insecurities about who he is and where he comes from. He’s unsure of himself in a lot of ways and uses humor to keep everyone at arm’s length so they don’t ask too many questions about the fractured boy underneath.
My orneriness went into Trick. He is stubborn and hard-headed, but most of all, he is determined to prove himself to his older brother, Kaipo. Throughout life, I’ve had this oftentimes near-fatalistic desire to prove myself to my peers. I still struggle with it to this day.

Rumor Mora fears two things: hellhounds too strong for him to kill, and failure. Jude Welton has two dreams: for humans to stop killing monsters, and for his strange abilities to vanish.
But in no reality should a boy raised to love monsters fall for a boy raised to kill them.
Nyx Llorca keeps two secrets: the moon speaks to her, and she’s in love with Dahlia, her best friend. Braeden Tennant wants two things: to get out from his mother’s shadow, and to unlearn Epsilon’s darkest secret.
They’ll both have to commit treason to find the truth.
During one twenty-seven-hour night, if they can’t stop the war between the colonies and the monsters from becoming a war of extinction, the things they wish for will never come true, and the things they fear will be all that’s left.
27 Hours is a sweeping, thrilling story featuring a stellar cast of queer teenagers battling to save their homes and possibly every human on Sahara as the clock ticks down to zero.
Tristina Wright is a blue-haired bisexual with anxiety and opinions. She’s also possibly a mermaid, but no one can get confirmation. She writes YA SFF about queer teens because they deserve the spotlight. She married a nerd who can build computers and make the sun shine with his smile. Most days, she can be found drinking coffee from her favorite chipped mug and making up stories for her two wombfruit, who keep her life unpredictable.
