The night sky is very dark without a moon, and there hasn’t been one for decades. Without one to govern the oceans, it falls to Riven, reluctant sea-witch, to sail out alone every night across the midnight ocean to cast a spell to call in the tides.

She hates it. Hates the moonless dark, hates the endless deep, and hates the fact that without a witch to sing in the tides, sea and land alike would fall to ruin. Riven faces her worst fear every night for years – until she meets a mermaid. Her new friend is lost, starving, and just as lonely as she is. And now that they’ve found one another, neither of their nights on the midnight sea will be the same.

REVIEW

This was a very lovely short story! It tells the tale of a witch named Riven who’s forced to travel onto the ocean each night and call in the tides, and the mermaid she meets one night when she returns to land.

I love the way that RoAnna Sylver is able to weave such complexities into a mere thirty pages. Never once did this book feel unfulfilling or boring. The characters are more fascinating that one might expect from a short story, and they are multifaceted, which is explored within. The friendship, and eventual romantic relationship, they formed was beautiful and comforting. And, while the plot “surprises” weren’t unexpected, they were still a joy to have confirmed.

This short appears to be the beginning of a series, so I cannot wait to see more of these two in the future!

RoAnna Sylver is passionate about stories that give hope, healing and even fun for LGBT, disabled and other marginalized people, and thinks we need a lot more. Aside from writing oddly optimistic dystopia books, RoAnna is a blogger, artist, singer, voice actor, and Verified Creator on Moviepilot.com.

RoAnna lives with family and a small snorking dog near Portland, OR, and probably spends too much time playing videogames. The next adventure RoAnna would like is a nap in a pile of bunnies.
