When the gods come calling, you don’t get to say no.
Patrick Collins is three years into a career as a special agent for the Supernatural Operations Agency when the gods come calling to collect a soul debt he owes them. An immortal has gone missing in New York City and bodies are showing up in the wake of demon-led ritual killings that Patrick recognizes all too easily from his nightmares.
Unable to walk away, Patrick finds himself once again facing off against mercenary magic users belonging to the Dominion Sect. Standing his ground alone has never been a winning option in Patrick’s experience, but it’s been years since he’s had a partner he could trust.
Looking for allies in all the wrong places, Patrick discovers the Dominion Sect’s next target is the same werewolf the Fates themselves have thrown into his path. Patrick has been inexplicably attracted to the man from their first meeting, but desire has no place in war. That doesn’t stop Patrick from wanting what he shouldn’t have. Jonothon de Vere is gorgeous, dangerous, and nothing but trouble—to the case, to the fight against every hell, and ultimately, to Patrick’s heart and soul.
In the end, all debts must be paid, and Patrick can only do what he does best—cheat death.
A Ferry of Bones & Gold is a 115k word m/m urban fantasy with a gay romantic subplot and a HFN ending.

“I’ll be your weapon if you’ll be my pack.”
With A FERRY OF BONES & GOLD, Hailey Turner provides an explosive, action-packed first novel in a new urban fantasy series!
Being my first Hailey Turner novel, I didn’t really have any expectations going in. I knew the book was urban fantasy, there’s a queer subplot, and there’s a bunch of different mythological creatures. That could describe any number of paranormal books currently on the market, so I was curious to see how Turner would develop the different mythos.
And I wasn’t disappointed at all!
There is a plethora of different paranormal and mythological creatures within the pages of this book, but Turner weaves them in such a way that they all make sense together. The Greek gods and goddesses within the novel are as condescending and self-serving as one would expect from reading the original myths, but they are also developed well, in that Turner gives them “human” emotions. They’re scared to die; they feel anger, get nervous, love deeply. And interestingly, there’s connections and interactions between different pantheons hinted at–I’m very interested to (hopefully) see more between the Greek and the Norse gods in future books, as those are the main pantheons within the novel. Also, there’s the classic vampires vs werecreatures rivalry that plays out both in the regular ways as well as more modern ways–business, relationships, etc. And on top of all of these, there are demons, witches, mages, and more. They’ve all build an intricate world for themselves amongst the humans within contemporary society, keeping up with the times, and in some instances, providing the necessary advancements. It was so fascinating to see the ways in which they interacted with modern society while still falling into and following some of the ancient customs.
Along with the worldbuilding, the characterization was incredibly complex as well! Though I certain had favorites from among the characters within the novel, nearly every single one of them were fascinating and attention grabbing in their own ways. Patrick, the main character, was interesting to me in the dichotomy of him–he is in turns pessimistic and bogged down by past hurts that follow him into the future, and almost naively optimistic that things will go right for once. He has a strong sense of honor–though flexible at times–that leads to him carrying guilt around with him. Really, he needs a huge hug. Jono, the love interest and other main character, was a joy to read about. He’s sarcastic, loyal, determined, and he’s the perfect roadblock to Patrick’s self-sacrificing tendencies. The two of them together was both hot and sweet, and I really cannot wait for more of them together.
The rest of the supporting cast was really amazing too. I adored Marek, the seer unwillingly lead around by the Fates. He tries so hard to help and feels so bad when it puts his friends in further danger. (He’s another who needs a hug.) All the women in this book are really amazing and badass in different ways–Nadine in how she’s practically fearless in the face of the hell they’re dealing with; Sage in her tenderness and care for her partner and pack; Emma in how she’s not afraid to stand toe-to-toe with someone twice her size, twice as powerful if it means protecting her pack; and Setsuna, who isn’t afraid to do what needs to be done, no matter the cost.
Great characters and worldbuilding, and nonstop action makes this book, and series, one to keep tabs on! I personally can’t wait for more!

“Don’t let the Fates take control of your life, Jono. Marek doesn’t have a choice, but you do,” Patrick said quietly.
Jono reached out and trailed his fingers along the edge of Patrick’s jaw, his touch warm, like it always was. “Guess we’re just gonna have to murder the fuck out of the Dominion Sect bastards together then, won’t we?”
Patrick was reminded of a lesson learned the hard way in the field—rules of engagement were for people who were never desperate.
Must be why I’ve always been a rule breaker, Patrick thought, before saying, “You know our chances are shit, right?”
“Can’t be much worse than waking up in hospital after a bad car crash with the werevirus running through your veins.”
“Didn’t take you for an optimist.”
“I can be with the right motivation.”
The filthy look Jono shot him made Patrick wish they were alone in his apartment with nothing to do tonight but fuck. Except there was a plan in the works that involved saving a city and time wasn’t on their side.
A B O U T T H E A U T H O R :
Hailey Turner is big city girl who spoils her cats rotten and has a demanding day job that she loves, but not as much as she loves writing. She’s been writing since she was a young child and enjoys reading almost as much as creating a new story. Hailey loves stories with lots of action, gritty relationships, and an eventual HEA that satisfies the heart.
