Cash is a car mechanic with a secret. Head down, sleeves up, he hides from the past as much as his shattered heart, until a reluctant stumble into a Tottenham bar ends in the one night stand of his dreams.

Hunt saboteur Rae can’t believe his luck when he wakes up the next morning. Cash is gorgeous, and the hottest hook up he’s ever had. He doesn’t expect to see him again, until a twist of fate lands him on Cash’s doorstep a few months later.

United by a cause that’s broken Cash before, they are drawn together. They have more in common than they ever imagined, but with Cash haunted by the past, and Rae so tangled in the present, it’s not long before love isn’t enough to keep them alive.

Sabbing had been my life, but Cash was my world.

This book is so intensely heartbreaking, as all of Garrett Leigh’s books are. It’s so clearly something that is very personal to her, which makes it pack even more of a wallop, because you can feel the emotions she put into everything, as well as the emotional toll it had to take to write something like this.

The topic of this book is one that will definitely be difficult for some to read, because outside of the romance, the main aspect of the story is hunting (fox hunting, specifically) and being a sab (saboteur) and actively preventing the hunts. It’s an important topic, and one that Leigh has spoken about many times, and it’s really difficult not to get emotional when reading about it. While no animals are killed on page, we all know the reality that the sabs sometimes aren’t successful and they, of course, can’t be everywhere at once. Both of the main characters, Cash and Rae, are so passionate about the cause that it’s easy to get swept up with them. There were so many times where, if I hadn’t been sneak reading on my work computer, I would’ve cried otherwise, because Leigh pulls very few punches and each one is harder than the next. This book is not one that I’d recommend reading when you’re in a bad state of mind, though I absolutely do recommend it in general, if you’re able to handle reading about the topic.

And, as always, the characters of this novel are beautifully complex. Cash is a man who’s trying to live a quiet life years after the biggest betrayal of his life while dealing with depression. And he’s lost. So much more than he knows. He’s got friends in Lucky and Dom (the main characters from the first book, LUCKY), but he’s still so lonely, until Rae comes barely into his life. Though he initially doesn’t want to be drawn back into the fray of sabbing, Cash can’t resist Rae and wanting to be around him, and thus begins the on again, off again, rollercoaster of a romance these two engage in. And then there’s Rae, who is so smart and passionate, ready and willing to do whatever it takes for the cause and his family of sabs. He’s so full of life and warmth, and his presence and steadiness is part of what encourages Cash to open his wounded heart again and let Rae in. The two of them together is just as intense as the rest of the novel, and it’s such a struggle to watch the two of them dance around and hurt each other, until finally giving in and realizing they love and really need the other. The peaceful ending is like letting out a long breath to relax after being held on the edge of Tension Cliff for so long.

Additionally, I adored the friendships between Cash, Lucky, and Dom and getting to see the three of them together so often. They’re such a solid, found family and it’s so lovely to read about how much they truly care about each other and are willing to go through hell or high water for each other.

All in all, this book was really amazing, and I cannot wait for the next in the series and hope to see Cash and Rae make more appearances in JUDE.
