SIDEKICK SQUAD BLOG TOUR (Part 3): Not Your Backup by CB Lee

bt_nyb banner

Hello hello, good morning, y’all!

Today, I’m super excited to be part of the blog tour for C.B. Lee’s SIDEKICK SQUAD, which was organized by the amazing CW over at The Quiet Pond!

When I signed up to be part of the tour, I decided to select the option to do a series review. Since I hadn’t yet read the first two books, I figured it would be fun! But reviewing three books for one day…ambitious, yeah? Especially when you consider that I’ve been in a reading slump since February. *lolsobs* But! I’m excited to say that I’ve managed to fulfill my obligation (yay!).

So! As part of the tour, instead of doing a single post for the series, I decided to make it an all day celebration by writing an individual review for all three books and posting them separately! And this is the final post of my blog tour stop *sad face*.

Feel free to leave some comments and share your own thoughts on the books! And be sure to check out the other stops on the tour–all linked at the end of the review posts!

The immortal mages have risen, and they’re out for blood.

Khya arrived at the Ryogan coast too late to stop the invasion. Now, cities are falling before the unrelenting march of an enemy army, and Khya’s squad is desperately trying to stay ahead of them. Warning the Ryogans, though, means leaving her brother imprisoned even longer. Time is running out for everyone.

But how can her squad of ten stand against an army of ten thousand?

Calling in help from every ally she’s made in Ryogo, Khya tries to build a plan that won’t mean sacrificing her friends or her brother. It’s a tough balance to find, especially when the leadership role she thought she wanted sits heavy on her shoulders, and her relationship with Tessen is beginning to crack under the strain.

The end is coming, and there’s no way to know who’ll be left standing when it hits.

Received From: NetGalley / A Novel Take PR

Petty Officer Bacon, a navy SEAL and ace sharpshooter, has been on the front lines of more than his fair share of dangerous ops. Yet when a minor injury relegates him to the beta team, he’s tasked with what may be his riskiest assignment yet: the silver fox journalist he’s babysitting is the hottest, most charismatic man he’s ever encountered.

Award-winning journalist Spencer Bryant may have been named one of Pride magazine’s most eligible bachelors of the year, but he’s not looking to change his relationship status. He’s a consummate professional who won’t risk his ethics or impeccable reputation by getting involved with a source. Even a sexy-as-hell military man. But while Spencer can resist his physical attraction to Bacon, he has less control over his emotions—especially when the mission goes sideways and the two men are trapped alone.

Getting out of the jungle alive turns out to be easy compared to facing the truth about their feelings for one another back in the real world. And whether or not they can build a future is a different story altogether.

This is Royal life. Not a fairytale.

Sasha

When I think of princes, I know exactly who I am looking for. A sophisticated, handsome man who will ride with me into the sunset.

Surly, generous, blond alphas nicknamed “Iceman” need not apply.

I thought I was saving his life when I went to warn him about the bad guys gunning for him. But then I saw him in action. And he doesn’t need my help at all.

The Iceman is an ex-military warrior.

When the world rights itself after my night of danger, I am flying on a private jet to a tiny nation in the Swiss Alps with the Iceman. Turns out, the warrior is the Prince of Stellangård in disguise.

And he just might be everything I am looking for.

Except, this is real life. Not a fairytale. And The Ice Prince could never belong with a struggling student-waitress from New York City.

Right?

Alexander

I thought I could outrun my past, my guilt, and duty to my homeland by joining the military. And it worked like a charm for a decade.

But civilian life is much more exciting and dangerous.

And Sasha Ray is the most dangerous of them all.

She is meant to be protected within the walls of the castle I call home. But she destroys my defenses with her compassionate heart and sharp wit.

I am known as the Iceman for a reason. I don’t melt. I don’t give in to temptation, even when every touch makes me want her past sanity.

This is Royal life. Not a fairy tale. And I know the price she’d have to pay for being mine.

Don’t I?

When fire and ice collide, all bets are off. And with an unknown enemy closing in, can Sasha and Alexander decide if happily ever after is worth everything – especially their hearts?

Meet the Royals of Stellangård – Alexander, Helena, and Michael – burdened by their heritage, freed by love.

The Book

25760792Two o’clock was missing.

In an alternate Victorian world controlled by clock towers, a damaged clock can fracture time—and a destroyed one can stop it completely.

It’s a truth that seventeen-year-old clock mechanic Danny Hart knows all too well; his father has been trapped in a Stopped town east of London for three years. Though Danny is a prodigy who can repair not only clockwork, but the very fabric of time, his fixation with staging a rescue is quickly becoming a concern to his superiors.

And so they assign him to Enfield, a town where the tower seems to be forever plagued with problems. Danny’s new apprentice both annoys and intrigues him, and though the boy is eager to work, he maintains a secretive distance. Danny soon discovers why: he is the tower’s clock spirit, a mythical being that oversees Enfield’s time. Though the boys are drawn together by their loneliness, Danny knows falling in love with a clock spirit is forbidden, and means risking everything he’s fought to achieve.

But when a series of bombings at nearby towers threaten to Stop more cities, Danny must race to prevent Enfield from becoming the next target or he’ll not only lose his father, but the boy he loves, forever.

Why I Chose to Spotlight This:

Timekeeper is…everything. It’s got so many things I love. Queer characters! POC characters! Girls who will step on you if you look at them the wrong way but will kiss you afterwards! Puppy boys with hearts of gold that turn you to mush! Steampunk! And so much more!

Tara Sim takes an intricate world and plot, and she flawlessly weaves it into something you simply cannot put down. You will absolutely lose your heart to Danny and Colton, fall hopelessly in love with Cass and Daphne, and sit on the edge of your seat while the four of them band together to solve the mystery of why clocks around England keep Stopping, freezing whole towns in their tracks.

I also really enjoyed the fact that it was a steampunk setting, which allowed Sim to add in more technological advances than actually existed during the time period. My favorite was Cass’ creation of the seat belt, brought on by an unfortunate personal disaster but which was ultimately helpful to Danny and saving Time.

If you haven’t checked this book out, you 100% should. And then tell me how much you loved it!
